Our town is about 800 pop.
    We had one ALCB store.
Now the bar has a store and the old govt. building is one as well.
The entrepreneur that owns the old ALCB store is open twice the hours often working himself. Two part time help. Bringing stock people want. U want cheaper nonunion or foreign beer? No problem.
He's also paying his own pension etc.
It's just booze. Raise the taxes if u want or walk on by, I don't get the problem.!??

Government getting out of the business of this business is a good thing. Optics aside, govt should be the regulator here. Think cotton nailed it to.

Alberta according to CD Howe institute lost 1.5 Billion in revenue since liquor stores were privatized in 1993

So if we as taxpayers have to pay for all the Social and health Issues from Alcohol, why would you let private industry reap the profits at the stores.

$1.5B left in the pockets of the people of Alberta! Such a shame.

How much of that would have been sent to Quebec in the form of transfer payments?

Mustard: Social impact... you make a good point. If there is no revenue from it to cover the health care costs associated with the negative impacts why should my tax dollars pay for health care. I never see anyone lining up to pay their own health care costs. Personal responsibility in a socialist system is seldom present.

Pretty sure the number 1 health care cost is obesity,by a long shot.

A sugar tax comparable to alcohol and tobbacco would be fair but heh 2/3rd's of people would scream bloody murder so lets all kick the sinners together.

Obese should have to pay for health care, just watch the weight fall off. Of course down goes spending on food and demand for farm products. Corn sugar should be ILLEGAL. Just watched Dr. Perlmutter on PBS, grain/gluten is poison, #1 cause of Alzheimer disease.

Ex wife just found out she had a gluten problem after two years of doctor appointments many specialists. She talked to a friend that said try going off gluten. It worked. Ok dont think this is everyones problem now but how could the doctors here have missed such a common obvious problem. I immagine the doctors and speciallists costed 50, 000 grand or more paid by tax payers. I am dissapointed in the doctors.
