Deere lays off 120 harvester production workers

    John Deere Harvester Works
    LayoffsPosted: Feb 13, 2014 7:10 AM MST

    By: Newsroom, newsroom@cbs4qc.com

CBS4 received a notice from Deere and
Company, that the company has informed
the workforce at the John Deere Harvester
Works in East Moline, Illinois that
    approximately 120 employees will be
    placed on indefinite layoff effective
    March 31th.

John Deere Company officials sent out the
    following:

Employees were told of the layoffs by
factory leadership in a series of
    meetings today at the factory.

Deere had indicated in November that it
expected a downturn in the market for
    large farm
equipment such as that made at the
    Harvester Works.

In its quarterly earnings announcement on
Wednesday, Deere said it expected the
farm equipment industry in the U.S. and
Canada to experience a 5 to 10 percent
decrease over the record levels it had
    reached in 2013.

The impact of today's announcement is
    already included in the company's
    economic forecast.

Although Deere has hired hundreds of
employees in the Quad Cities in the past
three years, the company has consistently
stated that the size of the workforce in
    any specific factory will be

matched to the market demand for products
    manufactured in that factory.

The Harvester Works currently has nearly
2,800 employees with about 2,000 of them
    working in production jobs.

The layoff announced today will be based
    on seniority.

    Today's announcement concerns only the
Harvester Works and does not impact any
    other
    location.
