    Latest StatsCan Production Report

    Statistics Canada released its third and final production estimates for 2011 Tuesday morning. Production of all varieties of wheat were up across Canada this year compared to last, while canola production hit a record high. Production of both corn and soybeans dropped year over year. Canada produced a record 14.17 mmt (million metric tons) of canola in 2011, up from 12.773 mmt in 2010. The figure was revised up from the 12.928 mmt projected in the September report, and was within expectations of 13.5-14.4 mmt. Prairie farmers reported that canola production increased 10.7% from 2010 to a record 14mmt. Provincial records were set in both Alberta, which production 5.3 mmt, and Saskatchewan, where production reached 7.0 mmt. However widespread spring flooding in Manitoba caused the province’s canola production to fall 25.3% from 2010.

    Total soybean production in Canada for the 11/12 marketing year was reported at 4.25 mmt, down from the 4.35 mmt produced in 2010. Soybean production in Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba declined from that of the record set in 2010. Ontario produced 3.0 mmt of soybeans, 2.7% less than the record 3,081,600 mt in 2010. Soybean production in Quebec fell 0.9% from 2010 to 800,000 mt while production in Manitoba fell 5% to 413,700 mt.

    Total Canadian oats production was reported at 3.0 mmt, within expectations of 2.082-3.6 mmt. 11/12 oat production was higher than the 2.479 mmt produced in 2010. 7.76 mmt of barley was produced this year, compared to 7.605 mmt in 2010. This was below expectations of 7.91-8.4 mmt and lower than September’s estimate of 7.897 mmt. 368,000 mt of flaxseed was produced in 2011, down from 423,000 mt in 2010. This was lower than September’s estimate of 378,000 mt and below the average analyst expectation of 385,000 – 400,000 mt.

    Total Canadian wheat production rose by 2.1 mmt, or 9%, from 2010 to 25.26 mmt. This was 1.1 mmt higher than the estimate in the September report, and slightly above expectations of 24.2 – 25.2 mmt. Provincial records for wheat were also set in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

    Canadian winter wheat production was reported at 3.058 mmt, up from the estimated 2.977 mmt in the September report at higher than 2010’s 2.657 mmt. Spring wheat production was reported at 18.031 mmt vs. September’s estimate of 17.243 mmt and last year at 17.484 mmt. Durum wheat production was reported at 4.17 mmt, up 231,000 mt from the September report and compared to 3.025mmt in 2010. Durum wheat production increased by 36.4% in Saskatchewan to 3.6 mmt while production in Alberta rose 47.1% to 620,500 mt
