I think there is a lot of merit in the idea Rodb is expressing?
I would suggest our present public medi care situation is a prime example of a good "socialist" idea gone wrong?
The purpose of publically funded medicare wasn't to make doctors rich or take all responsibility for our personal health away from us? Or at least I never thought that it was.
The purpose was to make sure people didn't die or lose everything they had if they got sick!
So what do we see today? We see bloated admistration beuracracies. We see multi millionaire doctors. We see people going to the doctor for every trivial little thing imaginable. We see general practitioners who are little more than expensive middle men for specialists and pill pushers. We see a system that is way out of control because it is "free"! Eventually it must collapse upon it's own socialist excesses!

As we also most importantly we see people going to see the doctor when they absolutely need help and the doc is in a hurry cause have to rush the patients through and the guys of us who need to see the doc get rushed out of the office this is not the way our health care should be.
