CWB Election Forum at Yorkton, Sask.

Three CWB Marketing Choice Director hopefuls and Single Desk incumbent Michael Halyk squared off at a forum sponsored by the Foam Lake Marketing Club on Wednesday night in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Bill Cooper chaired the meeting and CJGX Radio's Ray Greneville MC'd the meeting.

A full hall with quite a rowdy crowd listened to each of the four candidates make 7 minute presentations to the farmers. Dwayne Anderson, Bill Rusk and Brad Hamner all made their positions very clear...they stood for marketing choice.

Michael Halyk defended single desk. Halyk really got grilled about issues. He admitted that the Canadian Wheat Board has been breaking the Act and that the federal Government is responsible for paying the licensing costs across Canada instead of the money coming out of the pooling accounts as is presently being done. This is one of the questions Alberta's Chatenay keeps demanding that his Board must address, but his fellow Directors ignored him. Halyk said they are looking into seeing something is done.

Halyk also apologized to the crowd for taking money out of the pooling accounts to give to the Liberal fundraiser. He couldn't have been too filled with regret though, because he said the money had not been put back into the pooling accounts either.

Generally, there was a lot of criticism towards Halyk. The rising cost of CWB administration was a sore spot again. Jailing farmers was an open wound.

he other candidates were hardily applauded when they gave strong opinions about how the CWB should be run. No mincing words from these candidates. And they were very definite about NOT switching camps after the election either. Ritter and Flaman were both scorned by majority of the farmers in attendance.

Some observers agreed that approximately 10% of those attending would be single desk supporters. There were many farmers lined up to ask questions from the crowd of 150, and the main theme for the evening was Marketing Choice.

    Parsley;

In the Westlock forum Mr. Macklin stated the $8-10mil cost of defending the CWB against the US was only half the cost of the US trade action... and that the FEDS were paying the other half... how accurate this is needs to be checked out...

The chance to dispute Mr. Macklin's statements was very limited... especially for members of the audience. This meeting was very polite... the chairman commented after how well behaved the audience was...

He thought the passion of the feelings against the CWB would have been expressed much more directly!

When the Chairman cut off questions... Mr. Macklin's open grin could be seen from CWB headquarters in MB!

Canadians really are a civil lot... really very polite and very forgiving!

      Parsley I almost forgot:

After the Westlock CWB Forum... a real CWB single desk lover exclaimed that all the rest of us market choice people should have been thrown in Jail with Chatenay ... and for a very long time... He asked if we were proud of destroying the CWB....

I told him it was obvious that we needed to get to more constructive and productive ways of dealing with each other...

The hated multi-national really does bring out the rath of many strong NFU types... Albert Wagner got roasted for being on the Monsanto GMO advisory group... accusted of election intereference by Monsanto for taking money for attending these advisory meetings... there are many strange twists to this election!

Parsley, I've had many similar experiences of huge support for a voluntary wheat board while speaking in Yorkton. As far back as 1996 there was always a minimum of 66% to a maximum of 90% support for freedom at any forum or meeting I ever participated in. But yet, sadly, Mike Halyk won the last election. Will he win this time? Will dead people, long retired farmers, and the people who don't understand preferential ballots return Halyk?

I know the candidates for Choice And Respect Eternally are working very hard, but must never become complacent. The samurai were taught to never underestimate their opponent. When the opponent appears the weakest, you must consider him all powerful. Only then will the strength to ensure victory be summoned.

One of the CWB supporters at Yorkton was shouting and making it very clear that farmers who differ from his point of view, should go to jail. So much for a union of farmers or thought. Some of his coherts and Halyk tried to paint the big companies as enemies , and they tried to make it seem as if the CWB was protecting farmers from these horrible forces of evil.

Dwayne Anderson Bill Rusk and Brad Hanmer stressed the importance of good working relationships and treating all our buyers of grain and business partners with respect.

This meeting was not as tame as yours was, tom 4CWB. The MC had to make people sit down above the shouts.
