    Custom Feedlots

A group of Alberta Ag Beef Specialists are doing a fact sheet on what to look for when selecting a custom feedlot for your cattle. Those of you in the crowd that utilize custom lots, what are the five most important things you look for when selecting a lot?? Also some of your more suttle points would also be great. Thanks!!!

Locally a group is in the final phases of a 20,000 head feedlot(sw sask.) -here are some of the main things -good water -clay soil, with poper slope(prefer south) -good access for traffic prefer highway site -less important but nice features -3 phase power -natural gas those are for the site, now in the general area you would be looking for steady local feed supplies, land for manure spreading, straw. of course in the end you can buid it anywhere. I say this cause we were told these things were important however in the end they decided to build the feedlot where they could get soil and water approval, they didn't get south slope-north, no 3 phase power or natural gas and it's located 1.5 miles off highway. I'm curious what others think of their decision to go ahead with feedlot in this area? They are looking for community support so if it's not going to work a lot of local people will suffer, better to find out now.
