    order in council announced

The federal government announced Friday it will compel railways to start clearing a backlog of grain across the Prairies, and issue penalties if they fail to meet the new targets.

Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced that the government has issued an order in council, which comes into effect immediately, that will force Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to move 500,000 metric tons of grain each week.

The railways will be required to provide documentation of the deliveries, and if they fail to meet the targets, will face daily penalties of $100,000.
