Does a Carbon Tax work?

Today on another thread SASKFARMER3 wrote: "Dont enjoy Christmas to much because Jan 1,st the stupidest thing to ever happen in Canada will start from Coast to coast, its Trudeaus wonderful Carbon Tax. Didn't work in any country on earth that tried it but our genius thinks it will work here."

I would like to know from what he is basing his statement that carbon taxes didn't work in any country on earth. In fact can anyone provide any hard facts that carbon taxes don't work?

BC has had a carbon tax from 2008 and its introduction dropped carbon emissions from 5-15% and yet its economy has outpaced most provinces. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/02/business/does-a-carbon-tax-work-ask-british-columbia.html?_r=0

Sweden has had a carbon tax since 1991 and they are still in existence. They claim is has reduced emissions by 20% "The main reason for this success, say experts, is the introduction of a carbon tax in 1991. Swedes today pay an extra 2.34 kronor (20p) per litre when they fill the tank (although many key industries receive tax relief or are exempted). "Our carbon emissions would have been 20% higher without the carbon tax," says the Swedish environment minister, Andreas Carlgren." (from the Guardian Newspaper, March 2008. A UBC blog in 2013 claims a 40% reduction because of the tax. CBC reports that Sweden's emissions dropped 22% between 1990 and 2013 because of the tax but its economy over the same time period grew by 58%

The UK carbon tax cut coal usage by 60%

Even Australia which had a carbon tax for only 2 years before it was cut by a change in government resulted in a 5% decrease in emissions during the period of the tax. Now instead of everyone paying a carbon tax, the government is going to provide financial incentives to business which cut emissions. But guess what, that incentive comes from government coffers collected from taxpayers. So is there really any difference if you pay a visible carbon tax vs more income tax to provide incentives?

Here is a world wide map of all the countries that have a carbon tax, cap and trade, or both. Are all these countries wrong? Please provide a similar map or listing of all the countries where it has failed. The carbon tax is poorly disguised. Supposed to slow climate change but this is really a transfer of wealth plan. Trudeau's ill conceived scheme is part of his globalization plan. Trudeau has abandoned what is good for Canada in favour of helping usher in the New World Order.

We thing is, if we've already produced a man made climate change reducing our carbon footprint won't reverse that. Climate Barbie and Gerald Buttface would do better by incentivizing ways to undo what's happened.

Nice map but China and Brazil are considering it but not implementing it. Maps pretty small once you take them out.

I’m considering drinking lots of tequila in Mexico but probably will stick with rum and beer.

Really dml you believe those stats but then again sweden and uk believe letting in muslims into their country is a good idea too. That ranks right up there with climate minister assuring canadians that natural gas is not a fossil fuel. Wow stupid ****ing libtard drivel.

You guys are all missing the point. I don't want more taxes either but the majority of Canadians support some type of action on climate change (including the Conservative party that signed the accord forcing Canada to take action). So like it or not, a carbon tax is coming.

Now some on here believe that fake news, like SF# claiming it has failed in every other country that has tried it, will stop the tax. But anyone who spends 5 minutes on line realizes that such statements are untrue. All such fake news does is causes those making such claim to lose credibility and worse, it weakens any argument that farmers need to be exempted from a carbon tax.

Instead of whining about the tax, we need to be making a rational case for exemption of agriculture from the tax (or at least a reduction). By showing that we cannot pass on the cost of tax, that we compete in a global market where our two biggest competitors Russia and US do not have a tax, it is possible to sway public opinion. But by name calling, making false statements, saying we will not pay any carbon tax, and showing cartoons of Trudeau turn most urban voters off and make us all look like hicks.

Dml, go on env.gov.bc.ca. You will find in 2004 BC emitted 70500 kilo tonnes of C02. By 2008 this had dropped to 66300 kilo tonnes of C02. By 2014 this level had dropped to 64300 kilo tonnes. Carbon tax imposed in 2008. Greater drop between 2004 and 2008 no carbon tax. Now oil and gas extraction value in constant I believe 2016 dollars. Go on bcstats.gov.bc.ca. Total value $7.978 billion in 2008,by 2013 $3.228 billion, recovered to $5.013 billion by 2014. Highest price of oil in 2014. Looks to me like carbon tax hurt the oil industry in BC. Look at stats draw your own conclusions.
